Wax is an organic, plastic-like substance that is solid at ambient temperature and becomes liquid when melted. Because wax is plastic in nature, it usually deforms under pressure without the application of heat. The following summarizes the general features of wax:
- Solid at ambient temperature
- Thermoplastic in nature
- Combustible
- Liquid at 110 to 200°F
- Insoluble in water
The term “wax” is applied to a large number of chemically different materials. Technological advances in the world today have led to an increasing number of commercially available substances of various chemical compositions and properties which have acquired the name “wax”. In the most general terms, waxes are “naturally” or “synthetically” derived. We are dealing in following Waxes.
Paraffin waxes are derived from crude oil during the production of light (distillate) lubricating oils. These waxes are categorized by oil content and the degree of refinement. The crudest versiADEons fall into the slack wax category and contain between 5% to 20% oil. Next on the step of refinement are scale waxes containing between 0.5% to 5% oil. The highest grade of refinement is the fully refined wax. Fully refined paraffin waxes contain less then 0.5% (0.8% for the high welted products) oil and have been hydro-treated or clay treated to remove impurities and decolorarion . The resulting waxes are water clear, odor free, and normally food grade. Semi refined paraffins contain between 0.5 and 1.5% oil. Below we give the usual melting point ranges of our fully and semi-refined paraffins. Polyethylene Wax, also known as PE Wax, is an ultra low molecular weight polyethylene consisting of ethylene monomer chains. PE wax has a large variety of uses and applications. PE Wax is available from on-purpose production and as a byproduct of polyethylene production. This material is available in both HDPE and LDPE forms. As there are many grades and types available from IRM, please inquire so that one of our knowledgeable representatives can assist you in locating the correct grade that matches your requirements.
Microcrystalline waxes are elastic and often “sticky” or “tacky”. This is because of the high proportion of multi-branched hydrocarbon chains (iso-paraffins) as opposed to straight-branched chains (normals). While normal paraffins form large crystals, iso-normal paraffins form micro-crystals. These small crystals give an amorphous structure to the product making our Indramic products very flexible in contrast to the brittle nature of normal paraffins.
Micros are highly cohesive; this gives them adhesive properties and makes them resist both water vapor and liquid water.
- Chemically Inert (odorless, tasteless)
- High Melting Point (relative to paraffin)
- High Viscosity
- High Cohesion and Adhesion
Uses for Microcrystalline Wax
- Base for chewing gum, lipstick, cold creams, and ointments (where they harden, lubricate, carry additives, and protect against moisture)
- Food packaging, moisture proffing, film, foil, and corrugated board
- Increasing the fluidity and the flexible bonding of hot-melt adhesives
- Crayons, candles and caulk to sealants and fine polishes
- Host for compounds that prevent rust
- Insulating materials
- Candle Additives (where they “bind” excessive oil or fragrances)
Petrolatum is derived from high-viscosity, paraffin-based crude oils. Petrolatums contain minute (or micro), crystalline waxes. Oil is occluded within and between these small crystals. Petrolatum contains both paraffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons; the olefinic hydrocarbons. Olefinic hydrocarbons give petrolatum its “slippery” (oleaginous) character.
- Technical (industrial) petrolatum has a wide range of applications. Some examples: rubber processing aids; printing inks; carbon papers; buffing and polishing compounds; shoe polishes; corrosion preventatives; solder pastes; candles; dust control.
- For uses in close contact with human skin (pharmaceuticals, for example) petrolatum must be refined (USP grade). USP petrolatum has a specific gravity of 0.815-0.865 at 60°C.
- Crucial characteristics of the “pets” (of which Vaseline is one example) include:
- 1) melting points
- 2) penetration or hardness
- 3) color
- 4) viscosity
Slack waxes, as opposed to fully refined waxes, have an oil content of from 5 to 30%, depending on the product. They are a welcome by-product of the production of lubricating oils. They can be productively employed in many industrial processes as they are; or they can be mixed, blended, or further refined.
The melting points of slack wax varies from 105°F to 150°F.
Some examples of applications for slack waxes: in wax emulsions, as binders and water-proofing in artificial woods; in matches; in jar candles; in rust-protection products; in industrial lubricants; in arena-footing; in soil or turf protection; and in fireplace products.

White oils are highly refined mineral oils that consist of saturated aliphatic and alicyclic nonpolar hydrocarbons. They are hydrophobic, colorless, tasteless, odorless, and do not change color over time. Our white oils are chemically and biologically stable, non-comedogenic, and do not support pathogenic bacterial growth. These properties make white oils the standard in many industries.
Applications
White oils make an ideal blending base for personal care and pharmaceutical products. Their inert nature makes them easy to use, as they lubricate, smooth, soften, extend and resist moisture in many formulations. You can find our white oils in products ranging from baby oils and lotions to sunscreens, tissues and antibiotics.
The plastics industry uses our Hydrobrite line of low-volatility white oils in the production of polystyrene, polyolefins, thermoplastic elastomers, and various other polymers to improve and control the melt flow rate of the finished polymer to provide release properties or change the physical characteristics.
Our oils have proven themselves in food applications as wide-ranging as dough divider oils to dust suppression in grain silos. They lubricate food-handling equipment, impregnate wrapping paper to keep foods crisp, control foam in beet sugar and vinegar production, and enhance the leather tanning process. And our low pour-point naphthenic grades improve hot melt adhesives and lubricate air conditioner and refrigerator compressors.
